United States: A dozen kinfolk, bound by blood but scattered across Georgia, Texas, and Washington, ventured into the underbelly of Costa Rica seeking awe. What they unearthed was not treasure but torment.

During their December 21–28 escape, the extended family—six grownups between 42 and 49 and six young ones aged 8 to 16—stepped into the bowels of the Venado Caves, a site historically tainted by disease. They emerged carrying more than memories.

Unwelcome Souvenir: Histoplasmosis

Back on American soil, the aftermath surfaced. By mid-January 2025, a perceptive infectious disease expert in Georgia sounded the alarm to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Suspicions were rooted in a diagnosis with an ominous name—histoplasmosis.

Histoplasmosis, a lung-centered ailment birthed by inhaling spores of Histoplasma—a fungus nestled in soil graced by the droppings of birds or bats—has an insidious onset. In the family’s case, it mimicked graver foes. One adult’s chest scan evoked fears of malignancy.

The Timeline of Trouble

Symptoms bloomed in all 12 cave-goers—within 8 to 19 days post-exposure. Each was gripped by waves of fatigue, throbbing headaches, unrelenting fevers, nocturnal sweats, muscle soreness, labored breathing, and belly diseases, according to Fox News.

Yet, fortune showed a kinder face. All afflicted eventually convalesced fully within 28 days.

An Old Scourge Revisited

The Venado Caves aren’t strangers to infamy. In 1998–1999, they were the backdrop of another histoplasmosis flare-up, ensnaring 51 souls. Despite the decades, the spores still linger, waiting.

Swift Actions, Shared Warnings

The CDC acted with alacrity, dispatching alerts through its Epidemic Information Exchange to snare any missed cases. In tandem, the US Embassy in Costa Rica and the Costa Rican Ministry of Health have begun weaving warnings into tour waivers, urging caution before descent.

By March 2025, the embassy had issued a formal health alert, spotlighting the lurking hazard posed by spelunking in these particular caverns, according to Fox News.

Final Thoughts

What was meant to be a jubilant interlude in nature’s embrace transformed into a biological ambush. The Venado Caves, cloaked in mystery and microbes, remind us that adventure often courts risk. And sometimes, the most invisible foes wait in the dark.
