United States – The number of people suffering from serious illness after consuming mushroom edibles labeled as Diamond Shruumz-brand chocolate bars, cones, or gummies has increased, the US FDA said yesterday.

Latest Statistics

“As of June 17, 2024, a total of 26 illnesses have been reported from 16 states,” the FDA said in the most recent alert. This is an increase from 12 instances across eight states that were reported a week ago, as reported by HealthDay.

“Twenty-five of the 26 people have reported seeking medical care; 16 have been hospitalized,” the FDA added, noting that “no deaths have been reported.”

Although the precise nature of the disease is still unknown, the FDA noted that its investigation is still underway to determine the illness’ source and future action.

Ongoing Investigation

Symptoms have included “seizures, central nervous system depression [loss of consciousness, confusion, sleepiness], agitation, abnormal heart rates, hyper/hypotension, nausea and vomiting,” the agency added.

The Diamond Shruumz-brand mushroom edible products are currently available on the internet and in smoke/vape shops, legal CBD/THC shops, convenience stores, and any other store across the country. The affected retailers are being urged by the FDA to quit selling the products.

“FDA has been in contact with the firm about a possible voluntary recall, but these discussions are still ongoing,” the agency noted.

This the FDA noted, in an indication that the edibles are particularly perilous to the young and the vulnerable.

Risk to Children and Teens

The FDA also underscored that this product would attract children and teenagers due to its nature as a candy.

This advisory must be discussed with the children by parents and caregivers, and utmost care should be taken by not allowing the younger generation to come into contact with the product, as reported by HealthDay.

Any consumer who falls ill after taking Diamond Shruumz-brand products is advised to dial the Poison Help Line, 800-222-1222.
