United States: The emergency department at HCA Florida Brandon—Hillsborough County’s most frequented ER—is experiencing a dramatic upswing in patients seeking treatment for influenza-like symptoms.
“This is an unprecedented surge,” remarked Dr. Sergio Martinez, ER Medical Director. “We’re not encountering COVID cases, nor are we seeing Flu B. What we are inundated with is Flu A.”
Typically, Dr. Martinez encounters only a handful of influenza cases during a shift. However, on Saturday, flu-related admissions accounted for nearly one-third of all ER visits—a staggering deviation from the norm, according to fox13news.com.
“Within the last two to three days alone, I’ve witnessed a substantial increase in flu cases—far more than the usual,” he noted.
Even in the middle of flu season there’s still time to protect yourself from this year’s flu. The flu vaccine helps prevent severe flu illness. Anyone 6 months and older who has not had a flu vaccine this season should get one.

Analyzing emergency room statistics from the Hillsborough County Department of Health, Dr. Martinez observed a concerning trend.
“Currently, around 5-6 percent of all ER visitors are testing positive for influenza. Given the broad spectrum of cases we handle—from cardiac events to cerebrovascular incidents—this means that roughly one in every 20 patients is afflicted with the flu, which is significant,” he explained, as per fox13news.com.
Despite the high number of cases, most patients diagnosed exclusively with Flu A do not require hospitalization.
“I’m treating individuals presenting with other medical conditions who coincidentally test positive for the flu,” he added.
Symptoms and Potential Causes:
Patients commonly report severe fever, intense myalgia, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Physicians emphasize that individuals across all age groups are being affected. The seasonal flu is the primary driver behind the surge, but the recent drop in temperatures may be exacerbating the situation.
When to Seek Emergency Care
Medical professionals advise that individuals experiencing respiratory distress should promptly seek emergency intervention.
“The primary complication we worry about is pneumonia, which can arise from secondary bacterial infections superimposed on the flu,” Dr. Martinez cautioned, as per fox13news.com.
Dr. Michael Haynes, Director of the Pediatric ER at HCA Florida Brandon, noted that gastrointestinal manifestations in children could necessitate an ER visit.
“The most critical indicator for bringing a child to the ER would be severe diarrhea that prevents adequate hydration,” Dr. Haynes advised.
Preventative Measures
Both physicians underscored the importance of rigorous hand hygiene as a frontline defense against the flu.
“The unfortunate reality is that flu vaccines are formulated based on the previous year’s viral strains,” Dr Haynes noted. “While vaccination mitigates the severity of symptoms, it does not provide absolute immunity against contracting the virus,” according to fox13news.com.
The relentless spread of the flu across Tampa Bay underscores the necessity for vigilance. Monitoring symptoms, practicing preventative measures, and knowing when to seek urgent medical attention can help curb the impact of this seasonal outbreak.
