There’s still much to refine in this field, but the implications are profound.” 

Examining the Study: Structure and Outcomes 

The research involved 210 participants divided into two groups: 106 individuals had access to Therabot, while the remainder were placed on a waiting list as a control group. Each participant underwent rigorous standardized psychological assessments both before and after the study to measure symptoms of anxiety, depression, and eating disorders. 

During the initial four weeks, Therabot prompted daily interactions, but in the subsequent phase, engagement became voluntary. Despite this shift, participants continued to interact with the chatbot, demonstrating a surprising level of trust and connection akin to that experienced with human therapists, as per cnet.com. 

An analysis of usage patterns revealed that interactions spiked at night—critical hours when individuals often experience heightened distress but have limited access to human therapists. “Therabot was there in moments of acute need,” Jacobson explained, “whether it was the restless hours of early morning or immediately following emotionally turbulent experiences.”

Symptoms of major depressive disorder diminished by 51%. 

Symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder saw a 31% reduction.

Jacobson emphasized that the study did not exclusively involve individuals with mild distress. “Many participants had moderate to severe depression at the outset, yet they exhibited an average symptom reduction of 50%—effectively shifting them to mild or near-absent states.”

It was programmed to adhere strictly to evidence-based psychological methodologies and to flag critical cases—such as indications of self-harm—for immediate human intervention. 

Jacobson, recalling the study’s early phases, admitted to personally monitoring every interaction Therabot had with participants. “I barely slept during those first few weeks, ensuring the chatbot’s responses aligned with best practices.” 

Yet, human intervention was seldom required. Early-stage models had already demonstrated over 90% compliance with established therapeutic protocols. In the rare instances where corrections were needed, it was typically because the AI provided advice that, while technically sound, fell outside the appropriate scope—such as offering general medical guidance rather than referring users to healthcare professionals, according to cnet.com. 

Can AI Replace Traditional Therapy? 

The Dartmouth study underscores the potential of AI-driven therapy tools but simultaneously raises concerns about the unregulated use of general AI chatbots for mental health support. He further noted that even seemingly helpful AI-generated advice could be detrimental in specific contexts. For instance, if an individual with an eating disorder seeks weight-loss strategies, an unregulated AI might reinforce harmful behaviors instead of offering appropriate guidance. 

As AI therapy tools continue to evolve, Jacobson urges users to exercise caution. “The internet is a repository of both invaluable knowledge and perilous misinformation. AI reflects that duality.”
